  1. This is a book that you feel you need to comment on as soon as you finish. I would give it 2.5 stars because I did not exactly like it but I was grateful for the reminder that I need to stand up for what is right despite the costs.

The author has a quote at the end in the acknowledements. "You [holocaust survivors] are living miracles. And nothing you have said will ever be forgotten." We need to learn from history and not let it repeat itself.

My son was studying a little bit about the holocaust right now. he told me his teacher said to never draw the swashtica symbol. It gave a great Segway into talking him about whether or not he could stand up for what was right even if it meant he would die. What if all your friends and the police whom you trust wanted every Morman to be imprisoned. How would you react.

I liked reading the story about the woman with the eye patch who stumbled into a clearing where SS officers were killing jews who were her neighbors. She was so shocked into silence and fear and the officer poked a pin in her eye calling her a jew lover. She said the punishment fit the crime because she was still ashamed for not having tried to save them."I could have helped that girl before that terrible day . . . but I did not. I turned a blind eye yes? and the Bible says . . "

I wonder when I read books like this if I would just turn a blind eye.
